What is CAKE?

CAKE is a platform where blended learning is the absolute focus of what we do, bringing the best from the classroom and the online environment together. We believe in teacher led approaches, and believe that the traditional approach to online learning that being self led courses is not as effective as a teacher led assessment.

A Global approach to teacher training

Our software has been piloted across the State of Indiana with every district having a minimum of one educator having done the course. From those surveyed we got amazing feedback with 95% of educators taking the Introduction to Blended and Online Teaching course recommending the course to a colleague.

We believe that the practices learned by experienced educators in the online environment are sharable.Even across circular differences, good teaching practices and the sharing of these is an effective way of improving the learning outcomes for students everywhere.

What is Blended Learning?

A blended learning approach combines face to face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities to form an integrated instructional approach. In the past, digital materials have served in a supplementary role, helping to support face to face instruction. For example, a blended approach to a traditional, face to face course might mean that the class meets once per week instead of the usual three-session format. Learning activities that otherwise would have taken place during classroom time can be moved online.

As of now, there is no consensus on a single agree-upon definition for blended learning. The Resources page contains cites to several articles that provide definitions. In addition, the terms “blended,” “hybrid,” and “mixed-mode” are used interchangeably in current research literature. For the purposes of the Blended Learning Initiative at Penn State, the term “blended” is preferred.

What Outcomes have we had?

Under the state contract for Indiana CAKE has been used to run a blended learning course for every district in the state, the project piloted 1 teacher from each district, since which time individual districts have signed up to take courses by themselves. The course is being rolled out across the whole state post pilot, with individual courses contributing to educators professional growth points thus contributing to their annual reviews.
